Senators (AKA Coy Cook & The Senators) (1970-????)

History

Coy Cook formed the Senators in 1970. They were based out of Pensacola, Florida and were initially billed as Coy Cook & The Senators. Original members announced in the September 1970 issue of Singing News included Cook (tenor), Mack Evans (lead), and Dave Rowland (baritone). They were soon joined by Calvin Runion (bass).

Eventually the group was sold to J G Whitfield and Cook retired. The group was known simply as the Senators after being sold. Whitfield subsequently sold the group name to Ray Shelton of Memphis, Tennessee. Shelton's group which had been previously known as The Gospel Sounds adopted the Senators name. During their Memphis years, several established names including Bill Shaw, Jim Hamill and London Parris sang with the group. Hamill would return to the Kingsmen after a year or so. Mark Trammell got his start with the Senators before moving on to the Kingsmen.
