The Hemphills (1967-1990)

History

Even though Joel Hemphill and wife LaBreeska Hemphill had recorded two duet albums, the group, the Hemphills started singing in 1967. That first group consisted of Joel Hemphill singing lead, wife LaBreeska Hemphill singing alto, Joel's nephew Tim McKeithen singing baritone and Tim's wife Dixie McKeithen singing soprano.

Joel and Labreeska's children would join their parents on stage as Dixie and then Tim would leave to start a family and eventually begin their own family group, the McKeithens. Joey Hemphill would start out playing drums for the group and then begin singing around 1977. Trent Hemphill started playing bass for his family and then became the group's pianist. Finally, Candy Hemphill would have her first solo on a Hemphills album in 1975. It wouldn't be long until she became the group's soprano.

The Hemphills would travel as a family until their disbandment in 1990. Things came full circle for Joel and Labreeska in the late '90s as they began a new chapter in their career by once again performing as a duo.
