Stamps-Baxter Music
History
Stamps-Baxter Music may be the most prolific music publishing company in the history of Southern Gospel. The songs published by Stamps-Baxter were written by some of the most beloved songwriters and have been recorded by nearly every artist in the genre.
The Stamps-Baxter Music And Printing Company was founded by V O Stamps and J R Baxter in 1926. Stamps ran the main office in Dallas, Texas while Baxter headed an office in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In addition to the printing company, the Stamps-Baxter School Of Music was born out of this partnership. The school continues to meet annually.
Soon, there were numerous groups affiliated with Stamps-Baxter Music. A 1940 album published by Stamps-Baxter shows a total of 11 groups, most of which used some variation of Stamps, Baxter, or both in their names. Some of these include V O Stamp's Original Stamps Quartet, J R Baxter's Baxter Quartet, a group of printing company employees billed as the Stamps-Baxter Quartet, the Stamps-Baxter Blackwood Brothers, and a group headed by V O Stamp's brother Frank.
After the death of V O Stamps in 1940, J R Baxter relocated to Dallas to operate the company for the next 20 years. When J R Baxter passed away in 1960, his wife Clarice Baxter became president of the company until her death in 1972.
In 1974, Stamps-Baxter Music was sold to Zondervan, a major Christian book publisher. In 1997, Zondervan packaged the Stamps-Baxter Music catalog with Benson Music when they got out of the music business, selling both imprints and all associated music catalogs to Provident/Zomba. The Stamps-Baxter Music catalog was later sold to Capitol Christian, a company that controls roughly 75 percent of all Christian music copyrights.
