BMI

History

Broadcast Music, Incorporated, or BMI, is a performing rights organization founded in 1939. BMI collects fees for the performance of music and distributes the fees as royalties to the songwriters, composers, and publishers. BMI currently represents more than 300,000 songwriters, composers, and publishers, and more than 6.5 million compositions. BMI is one of three performing rights organizations officially recognized by the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976.
