"When The Old Old Story Was New" (Mark Mathes/Sue C Smith/Gene Ezell)

Story Behind The Song

After the Kingsmen released the song as a single, co-writer Gene Ezell shared the following account: "When Sue C. Smith, Mark Mathes, and I had finished writing the Kingsmen's latest radio single, Mark was playing piano and singing the vocals for our work tape and Sue was recording the work tape on her phone. I was listening with my eyes closed and just worshipping in that moment thinking how special this song and the writing session was. When Mark finished playing and singing, with my eyes still closed, I said out loud, "Oh my goodness, that is so good!" not knowing that Sue was still recording! Well, Sue sent that work tape to the Kingsmen-including my exclamation at the end-and praise the Lord, the Kingsmen did a marvelous job of recording our song!"
