The Rambos (195?-1980)

(also known as the Gospel Echoes and The Singing Rambos)

History

The Rambos were first billed as the Gospel Echoes in the 1950s. Original group members included Buck & Dottie Rambo and their pastor's daughter, Judy Russell.

In the early 1960s, Governor Jimmie Davis began publishing Dottie Rambo's songs. The popularity of the Gospel Echoes began to grow as a result. The group began recording for Warner Brothers in 1963, but the label wanted them to transition to a secular folk style. In 1965, the group name was changed to The Singing Rambos. That same year, Buck and Dottie's daughter, Reba Rambo, became an official group member and they moved to the Benson Company's Heartwarming Records label. As the years progressed, the group name was shortened to The Rambos.

In 1967, the Rambos entertained the troops in Vietnam. For that particular tour, they were billed as the "Swinging Rambos."

With original songs composed by Dottie (who would go on to write over 2500 songs) and their mixed trio format, The Rambos were unique in an industry dominated by male quartets. One popular tour billed as Gospel Fest U.S.A. included the Rambos along with the Oak Ridge Boys and J D Sumner & The Stamps. In 1977, they had a number one song on the Singing News airplay chart in "I've Never Been This Homesick Before."

Reba left the group in 1978 and was replaced by Patty Carpenter. The trio only continued for a short time after Reba's departure. Buck and Dottie recorded at least two albums as a duet format during the 1980s. Dottie's solo career continued until her death in 2008.
